Development of Herdade dos Lagos
For over thirty years, the Herdade dos Lagos is owned by the Zeppenfeld family. Over that time there have been many changes.
The Alentejo region is located in southern Portugal, and was in the earlier years considered the breadbasket of Portugal. Thus the origin of the farm is in agriculture.
When the Bremen shipowner Horst Zeppenfeld, still as captain, fell in love with this country, there was already a dream: the cultivation of vines and olive trees. The family and the manager Dietmar Ochsenreiter have worked steadily on the realization.
Today on the 1000 acres of pasture land with its five reservoirs for about 1000 sheep the cultivation of vines, olives and carob are in the foreground.
In the family the daughter, Antje Kreikenbaum, took over the marketing and distribution of the products of Herdade dos Lagos and the responsibility to promote new visions supported by her husband, the landscape architect Thorsten Kreikenbaum.
The conversion to organic farming was a great challenge and so far one of the biggest changes to the Herdade.
There were some bureaucratic obstacles on the way and reservations had to be overcome. But after a controlled transition phase one can now speak with pride of a certified organic winery.
Thus, the optimum conditions that can be found in the Alentejo, with its vast, unspoiled land and conserved natural resources are used. This results in natural wines and products that enable undisturbed taste.
